"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global following.

But Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
