Puzzling Pink Ooze on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Spurs Concerns of Possible Algae Outbreak

Authorities in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a rosy sludge that has appeared on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an algal bloom.

Extensive Appearance Across Shore

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a section of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been documented on parts of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.

Examples Collected for Testing

Examples have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for testing. A representative remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in food sources, warmth, precipitation or sunlight".

"They are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can turn the water reddish," the official said. "Only some phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types functioning as a key source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The usual source of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
